Acne

What is Acne?

For many, there’s nothing worse than struggling with frequent breakouts or painful cystic acne. Though acne poses no risk to one’s health, it can severely impact a person’s quality of life. This is why the team of board-certified dermatologists at Cumberland Skin are passionate about helping our patients clear up their skin to feel more confident and self-assured.

Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a common skin condition characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, pimples, and deeper cysts or nodules. It shows up on the skin when pores and follicles become clogged with sebum, which is the skin’s natural oil. Acne is most often found on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders, but can appear anywhere on the body.

Acne FAQs

Are you interested in learning more about acne and how we treat this common skin condition at Cumberland Skin? Our board-certified dermatologists answer the most common questions regarding acne and acne treatment in Hendersonville, TN.

As mentioned above, acne occurs when pores and follicles become clogged. The cause behind clogged pores and follicles, however, can vary from person to person. In many cases, this will be due to one or a combination of the following:

  • Excess sebum production.
  • Buildup of oil and dead skin cells.
  • Hormonal imbalance (puberty, pregnancy, menopause, or androgens).
  • C. acne bacteria.

To uncover the cause behind your acne, we recommend consulting with a board-certified dermatologist. If you’re in the Hendersonville area in Tennessee, get in touch with Cumberland Skin to learn more about our personalized acne treatment plans.

Acne can show up on the skin in several different ways. This may include whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts. There are also different types of acne, which includes:

  • Comedonal Acne – This is a superficial form of acne that is caused by clogged pores. Comedonal acne generally appears on the forehead or nose as tiny, pinpoint bumps.
  • Inflammatory Acne – Typically shows up on the skin as red, inflamed, painful blemishes. This kind of acne can appear anywhere on the body, but most commonly on the face, neck, back, or chest.
  • Nodular/Cystic Acne – Severe form of acne that results in large, pus-filled blemishes that grow deep into the skin.
  • Scalp Acne – Shows up on the scalp as whiteheads, pimples, or deeper nodules.

If you’re struggling with any of the acne forms mentioned above, please contact Cumberland Skin to learn more about our personalized acne treatment plans. We’re ready to help you achieve clear, acne-free skin!

Cystic acne, or nodulocystic acne, is one of the most severe forms of acne. It shows up as large, pus-filled bumps that grow deep into the skin. In many cases, this severe form of acne poses a high risk of scarring, especially when picked at or “popped.”

Acne may cause scarring depending on the type of acne and whether or not it was picked at. For example, cystic acne and inflammatory acne have a high chance of scarring, as these types of acne grow deep into the skin, trigger inflammation, and can cause serious skin damage.

Furthermore, picking at acne and blemishes may cause more scarring than the acne itself, which is why it’s crucial to avoid picking at breakouts.

Hormonal acne is a type of acne that flares up due to hormonal changes or imbalances. For instance, an increased level of androgens, which are male hormones, may cause the skin to produce more sebum.

Another example is the hormonal changes experienced during puberty. At this time, oil production may increase and cell turnover is not as efficient, which can clog pores and trigger breakouts.

At Cumberland Skin, topical retinoids are one of the main methods we use to address and treat moderate to severe acne. Retinoids help prevent the clogging of pores – the main cause of acne – by encouraging the shedding of skin cells, speeding up cellular turnover, and slowing collagen breakdown.

At Cumberland Skin in Hendersonville, TN, we use a combination of topical acne treatments, oral acne treatments, personalized skin care products, advanced cosmetic treatments, and OTC (over-the-counter) acne treatment recommendations to help our patients achieve clear skin.

This may include acne treatment options such as:

  • Oral Antibiotics
  • Non-Prescription Acne Cream
  • Photodynamic Light Therapy
  • Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations
